At the highest point of the village of Savignano Irpino, on the rocky summit of the ‘Tombola’, stands Guevara Castle, a silent guardian of the Cervaro Valley and a natural sentinel along the ancient route linking Campania and Puglia. Its location is no coincidence: from here, the view commands the landscape and overlooks that vital passageway which, over the centuries, has seen armies, merchants, pilgrims and wayfarers pass through.
As early as the 12th century, the small Castrum Sabiniani was situated between the church and the castle, protected by walls that ran along what is now Via Dietro Corte and the Finestroni Underpass, where Porta Lizza stood. To the north, a tower known as the Torretta completed the defensive system. Savignano formed part of a wider military triangle comprising the castles of Ferrara and the tower of Greci, both of which have since disappeared.
The earliest documented events are intertwined with the dynastic struggles between the Normans and the Swabians. In 1193, Lord Sarolo sided with Henry VI against Tancredi d’Altavilla: the castle was besieged, conquered and its lord executed on the ramparts. These episodes illustrate the strategic and political significance of this place.
During the Angevin and subsequently the Aragonese periods, the manor entered a new phase. In the fifteenth century, it was caught up in the disputes between Renato d’Angiò and Alfonso d’Aragona. Innico de Guevara remained loyal to the latter and, in 1445, acquired the Barony of Savignano. From then on, the castle took the name of the Spanish family, who gradually transformed it from a fortress into a baronial residence. In 1527, a major renovation – commemorated by the date engraved on the stone coat of arms – redefined its layout.
In the centuries that followed, the building became an administrative centre and a storehouse for foodstuffs. Earthquakes, collapses and looting compromised its integrity, culminating in the severe damage caused by the 1980 earthquake. Today, imposing sections of wall remain, in particular the south façade, some fifteen metres high, with a scarp base and a double row of single-lancet windows with archivolts, which bear witness to the austere elegance of medieval architecture.
The restoration work begun in the 1980s has stabilised the structures and restored the site’s cultural function. The ground-floor rooms, once used as storerooms and dormitories, still bear traces of ovens and a well with an underground cistern – tangible reminders of the daily life that once bustled through the complex.
Today, Guevara Castle is home to the Savignano Irpino Multimedia Museum of Memory and Knowledge, a venue dedicated to promoting the local history, traditions, stories and skills that have shaped the identity of the area. Its walls do not merely house ancient stones; they have become a living space for storytelling, interaction and the passing on of knowledge.
The castle is therefore not merely a monument: it is the recognisable symbol of Savignano’s collective memory, a presence that continues to watch over the village and, with austere dignity, to recount its long history.
